“I spoke with my friend who’s a VP of Design and his perspective was some people are not meant to become designers,” I said to my friend as I took a sip of chai. ☕️

“Not everyone is meant to be a designer.”

We’re sitting outside a cafe on Van Hallstraat in Amsterdam-West having an intense design discussion, as usual. 😛

My friend looked at me and said “I’m not sure if people should become designers anymore… If the plan is to do a career switch in 6 weeks, it’s a hard no.”

It was drizzling slightly as I readjusted Kuma in my lap. 🐶

“That’s what people get confused about bootcamps. It’s false marketing to say it would take anything under 6 months to really be ready to start interviewing for a job.”

“Right,” she said as she sipped her cappuccino. “If you actually invest in the longterm it’s a different story. People need to be realistic about their goal. A bootcamp is not going to do the work for you.”

I respond, “ooph, yeah it’s a different time now. The market is improving but companies are looking for top tier talent and the standards are incredibly high. Nowadays the portfolio expectations of juniors is MUCH higher.”

I believe everyone would benefit from learning design, but that does not mean everyone is meant to be in the profession.

🚫 You shouldn’t become a product designer if you don’t like learning.

Times are changing in Product Design.

The good news: More companies are hiring.

The bad news: Good designers are hard to find.

It’s more important than ever to,

  1. Know where you’re going

  2. Master your craft and

  3. Position yourself as an expert

So how can you develop yourself in the tech industry?
